World War: Hitler's Losses

The German High Command admitted last week that the German Army and Air Force had so far suffered 402,865 casualties in Russia. Of these, 85,896 were reported killed, 296,670 wounded, 20,299 missing.

BBC scoffed: "Hitler pretends that he has lost less than four men for each mile of the front per day. Any soldier who fought in the last war knows that a hundred casualties a division each day is an absolute minimum, even in trench warfare. With 15 divisions engaged, the minimum would be ... 1,225,000."

The truth doubtless lay somewhere between these two extremes.
