National Defense: Up In August

In August U.S. production of military aircraft reached a new high: 1,854 planes (up from July's indifferent total of 1,460). This news was not quite as good as it sounded when it was announced last week. About 200 planes built in July were not delivered until August because of temporary shortages of parts. When the parts arrived these planes swelled August's total deceptively. Best guess for September was that without a hangover from August the production total would be something better than 1,700.

But, making allowance for last month's inflated figure, August 1941 production was nearly three times that of August 1940....
