With the biggest country in the world fighting their enemy, with the richest sending them more & more aid, Britons last week had cause to feel a little gayer. So optimistic were some (particularly in unbombed areas) that they started subscriptions for victory festivities, even sold seats for a hypothetical peace parade.
Knowing that false optimism is as dangerous to morale as pessimism, Government and press promptly loosed a heavy bombardment against such Pollyannaism. Said Minister of Information Alfred Duff Cooper: "I was . . . somewhat horrified. . . ." Fumed the press:...
