At the end of a three-week crescendo, the R.A.F. could point with pride this week to 140 raids, in which it claimed 226 German planes while losing195—a remarkable record considering the fact that during this period the R.A.F. was on the offensive over the Channel coast and Germany by day as well as night. Said Winston Churchill: "We are now bombing the enemy at a heavier rate in discharge of tons of bombs than he at any monthly period has bombed us."
