Recently New York's Republican State Legislature and New York City's economizing Board of Estimate cut $8,300,000 from the budget of New York City's Board of Education. Last week the Board announced that it would have to:
> Abolish kindergartens (20,000 pupils).
> Close night schools (94,000 students).
> Discontinue 118 community centres, summer play schools, nature-study classes, many another activity.
>Fire 1,184 teachers, leave 600 teaching vacancies unfilled.*
New York parents were shocked. Soon parents, teachers, Mayor LaGuardia, the Board of Estimate and the City Council demanded that Governor Lehman call the Legislature into special session...
