BRAZIL: No Nazi

When ambitious little President Getulio Vargas of Brazil made himself an iron-clad dictator (TIME, Nov. 22), the alarmed press of democratic countries cried: "Naziism Invades Brazil." Most scared of all by this announcement was Dictator Vargas who had only intended to follow an old Latin American custom. Last week, informed that Government functionaries had ordered the deportation of 1,200 aliens who had entered Brazil as tourists and remained illegally, Dictator Vargas was shocked to learn that 900 of them were Jewish fugitives from Germany.
