Alabama is home to 2,700,000 U. S. citizens, but to Carl Carmer, a Yankee who lived there six years, it is also a queer place. Says he: "The Congo is not more different from Massachusetts or Kansas or California." His book, an anecdotal narrative of some of his experiences in Alabama, goes far toward bearing out his thesis.
