Last month the Harmon Trophy went to Wiley Post and the Daniel Guggenheim Gold Medal to William Edward Boeing. Last week the Collier Trophy— third in the trinity of aviation's outstanding awards—went to Frank Walker Caldwell for the "greatest achievement in aviation in America" during the past year. His achievement: the "controllable-pitch" propeller, which enables high-speed planes to take off quickly, climb rapidly, fly efficiently at high altitudes.
