In Manhattan definite announcement confirmed recent rumor: Conductor Willem Mengelberg will not return next season to the New York Philharmonic-Symphony (TIME, Jan. 27). In London last week it became known that he had been engaged to conduct the London Symphony in 60 concerts, an ambitious orchestral season for Britishers, inspired by the recent visits of the Berlin and Vienna orchestras under Wilhelm Furtwangler, another onetime New York Philharmonic conductor.
