FRANCE: New Tariff Rise

On the heels of the temporary settlement with the U. S. of the dispute over the new French tariff schedule (TIME, Nov. 21), the Government decreed an increase in the duties on wheat from 18.20 francs per 200 pounds to 35 francs; and on frozen meats, which since 1914 have not been taxed, to 85 francs per 200 pounds.

Both these increases hit U. S. shippers. No protest was envisaged in Washington as the increases are general and apply to all nations.
