Elected vice president of Saks Fifth Avenue, big Manhattan smartshop, was Ira Arthur Hirschmann, advertising director of Lord & Taylor since 1931. Son of a Baltimore banker, he left Johns Hopkins at 17, studied music, entered the L. Bamberger & Co. department store in Newark as an office boy. There he helped build up the radio station WOR, annotated its Philharmonic Orchestra broadcasts, became publicity and sales director at 25.
