In Austria last week the Schuschnigg Government blandly asked the Austro- American Magnesite Corp. for a "voluntary gift" of 200,000 schillings ($40,000).
Evidence seemed to indicate that this U. S.-controlled firm had backed the Austrian Nazis who assassinated Chancellor Dollfuss (TIME, Aug. 6).
Without waiting for formal charges to be preferred, Austro-American Magnesite, promptly paid the requested $40,000.
