RELIEF: One Out of Four

Last week United Press set out to collect an important statistic: the number of citizens living in whole or in part on Government money. It mustered the following roll:

Emergency Relief 3,600,000

Emergency Works (roads, etc.) 970,000

Pensioners (veterans, etc.) 918,568

Government Employes 911,234

Public Works Projects 600,000

Civilian Conservation Corps 280,000

Army, Navy & Marines 259,034

Total 7,538,836

On the basis of four persons to a family the Treasury was contributing directly to the support of some 30,000,000 peopleĀ— about one person out of four in the U. S.
