On the night of last April's primary in Illinois, James Simpson Jr.. 27, towheaded, horse-fancying son of the then chairman of Marshall Field & Co.. thought he had won the Republican nomination for Congress in the Suburban loth ("North Shore") district. In May the official count gave the nomination to State Representative Ralph Church by 73 votes. A recount failed to change the outcome.
