Schieferstein, onetime rich realtor who lived "like a hermit in one of my vacant flats, with a bed and a chair as my only furniture," committed suicide. He left a note: "I leave this world because I have been ruined by my wife and the laws and courts that make the racket of alimony possible. ... I had the grief and my wife had the gravy.
