One cold drizzly clay last week Democratic Arkansas did what no other State in the Union has ever done before. It elected a woman to the U. S. Senate. She is Hattie Wyett Caraway, the small, steady-eyed, straight-mouthed widow of Senator Thaddeus Horatius Caraway. Already sitting in the chamber by appointment of Governor Parnell, Mrs. Caraway did not bother to return to Arkansas to campaign against two feeble independents.
