After the wettest, coldest summer in years—a summer that rotted potatoes in the ground in Ireland, nearly ruined the French wheat crop, brought disastrous business to summer resorts—all Europe fried last week. Newspapers, eager to blame anything from the cost of living to the morals of the younger generation on the U. S., wrote columns about the "American heat."
