Theatre: Suppression

In London, the Earl of Cromer, Lord Chamberlain and official drama censor, politely, regretfully announced that The Green Pastures, Pulitzer-prize-winning Negro folk-play by Marc Connelly (TIME, March 10), might not be produced in London. Reason: since God is impersonated on stage, the play is sacrilegious. Playwright Connelly's comment: "I am mildly surprised to find the Lord Chamberlain's office unable to distinguish the difference between orthodox sacrilege and a simple miracle play."
