Two years ago Mexico's aviation idol, the late Capt. Emilio Carranza, laughed at bad weather reports, flew into a death-laden storm over New Jersey (TIME, July 23, 1928). Last week Mexico's new idol, Col. Pablo Sidar, called "The Madman" for his nerve, set out to capture the glory that had eluded his friend Carranza. In a special Emsco monoplane bought by public subscription, Sidar and Lieut. Carlos Rovirosa would fly from Cerro Loco (Crazy Hill) 5,000 mi. to Buenos Aires, the longest nonstop flight ever attempted. Rain and winds loomed in the South....
