Off San Diego in the Pacific last week the V4, largest U. S. submarine, "sank" in 86 feet of water, carrying down a crew of 87 officers & men. Thirty-nine minutes later they heard the welcome thump of a diver's 20-lb. shoes on her deck. Above was the rescue vessel Ortolan, from which air lines were attached to the VJs salvage plugs.
