Medicine: Periscope

In Manhattan, one Carl W. Paul announced that he had patented a periscope to enable chauffeurs to see behind them over the roofs instead of through the back windows of limousines and taxicabs. He explained: "It will materially add to the pleasure of riding. . . . There are many thousands of couples . . . riding in taxicabs every day and evening who are more or less embarrassed by the eye of the chauffeur looking at them from the mirror from time to time."
