Last week, off Port
Washington, L. I., a man in a U. S. Navy seaplane flew at an average
speed of 227 miles an hour for 30 minutes, at one time attaining a
speed of 242 miles. The man was Lieut. David Rittenhouse. The flight
established a record. The previous mark of 169 miles an hour was set by
Lieut. Rittenhouse himself at Cowes, England, last year.
