Recently the War Department received a brief communication:

"To the Adjutant General, Washington, D. C.

"Through Commanding General, District of Washington:

"Subject: Resignation.

"I hereby tender my resignation as an officer of the United States Army, to take effect Feb. 1, 1926.

"WILLIAM MITCHELL,

"Colonel, Air Service."

Action on the request was prompt. Three days later the following paragraph was published in Army Orders.

"The resignation of Colonel William Mitchell, Air Service, of his commission as an officer in the Army is accepted by the President, effective Feb. 1,...
