A lean young man with a puckered face stood at the rail of a liner that docked last week in Manhattan. He was Charles Hoff, famed all-around athlete, holder of the world's pole vault record (13 ft. 11 15/16 in.), arriving from Norway to compete in the season's indoor meets.
