Alfred Steiglitz, American photographer, was awarded by unanimous vote of the members of the Royal Photographic Society (London) the Progress Medala prize heretofore awarded solely for scientific achievement.
Years ago Steiglitz saw the possibilities of photography as an artistic medium and set out to make a photograph a personal thing that should be adapted to different typesnot a stiff, hard picture, but a soft, delicate thing, properly composed and balancedwith beauty of line and grace of movement, as in a fine painting.
