At a meeting of the Senate of Calcutta University, the retiring Vice Chancellor, Sir Asutosh Mookherjee read private correspondence between himself and the Governor. The Governor offered to reappoint Sir Asutosh if he would give constructive and not destructive criticism. The letter also accused the Indian of inspiring press articles against Government bills. Sir Asutosh replied: "Without hesitation I send the only answer an honorable man can send, the answer which you and your advisers expect and desireĀ— I decline the insulting offer you have made to me."
