By the payment of $4,028,085 the British Government has reduced its debt
to the United States to the round figures of $4,600,000,000. According
to an unofficial statement the payment was made in gold and was
placed to the credit of the United States in the Federal Reserve Bank
of the District of New York. It is understood that J. P. Morgan & Co.
handled the transaction.
