In the cross of Christ all Christians rightly glory, yet last week in Italy certain devout and worthy men—directors of colleges, teachers, professors—murmured against the display of the holy symbol. They objected on grounds of taste to an edict of the government ordering the crucifix to be placed on all universities and colleges—even in the Academy of Arts—as a step in the campaign to reconcile the Vatican and the Monarchy.
