Sport: The Phantom Passes

The flick of a glove lace in the eye has ended the ring career of Mike Gibbons after 15 years fighting. Oculists pronounce the injury which left one eye virtually sightless, received in training, incurable. Gibbons known as " The Phantom " in his time was one of the greatest of the middleweights. He is the elder brother of Tom Gibbons, Dempsey's opponent at Shelby.
