JAPAN: Bunka Undo

"Bunka Undo" means literally cultural movement. To the Japanese it signifies the cultural movement of Japanese women along Western lines.

Political rights for women is part of the bunka movement. There is a bunka restaurant in Tokyo where men and women meet to discuss politics on common ground. Tennis for women is bunka, but dancing—dancing is to the Japanese too degrading to be known as bunka. Books dealing with the part women are playing in democracy are bunka novels.
