The Nicholas medal of the New York Section of the American Chemical
Society was awarded to Thomas Midgley, of the General Motors Research
Corporation, Dayton, Ohio, for his work in reducing the detonation or
" knock" in automobile engines. The inventor is 32 years old, the
youngest recipient of the medal, which was established in 1903 for
achievements in chemistry.
