DIED. NIGEL NICOLSON, 87, biographer and publisher who preserved the literary legacy of the Bloomsbury group, most notably that of Virginia Woolf; in Kent, England. His best-known work Portrait of a Marriage — based on a memoir that his mother, novelist Vita Sackville-West, began in 1920, and that Nicolson found after her death in 1962--chronicles the devoted if unconventional union of his parents.

DIED. EDWARD LARRABEE BARNES, 89, architect who was famed for his sleek, modernist houses, churches and skyscrapers; in Cupertino, Calif. A proponent of simplicity and lucidity in design, Barnes once said most architectural ideas could be expressed on the back of an envelope.
