The first flush of democracy was hard on central Johannesburg. Crime forced many businesses to flee to safer suburbs; even the stock exchange moved out. But over the past few years the government and business groups have begun redeveloping the city, and visitors are starting to come back. One big success is Newtown, long the city's theater district and now full of restaurants and other attractions. Access to the area is easier with the opening of the Nelson Mandela Bridge over a number of railway tracks....
