The Bush administration is pleased with its handling of the crisis in Georgia, but its troubles there may not be over. President Eduard Shevardnadze agreed to step down Nov. 23 after protests nearly turned violent in the wake of parliamentary elections that were condemned as fraudulent. The U.S. says it helped defuse a crisis by timely moves like a joint Nov. 22 call to Shevardnadze by Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.N. chief Kofi Annan, who was visiting Powell at his home.
