Gunfire in Guangdong

Lin Yudui came home from Shanghai to his native Guangdong province earlier this month to get married. Instead, the parents of the 26-year-old air-conditioner salesman are now preparing for his funeral. Last Tuesday afternoon, Lin joined what locals estimate was a 1,000-strong protest in southern China's Dongzhou village, where three people had been detained while demanding compensation for land that residents say had been seized by local officials to build a power plant.
