  • OLDER MOTHERS In Massachusetts there are now more children being born to women older than 30 than to younger moms. A new study shows that for the first time, in 1996, slightly more than half the state's babies were born to older mothers, and the trend continued through 1998. Why? Experts say Massachusetts has a large number of highly educated women, and they tend to delay childbearing. Also, the state requires insurance companies to cover infertility treatments.

    TEACHERS' PETS Here's a novel way for men to boost their odds of a happy marriage: Don't teach in high school or college. New research published in Evolution and Human Behavior says men who teach there are more likely to be divorced than other men because of their regular exposure to young, attractive women. Also, they are less likely to remarry than other divorced men.

    DRIVING DANGER Summer can be the most dangerous time for a road trip, according to a new survey by , an insurance website. Of those questioned, 57% said they were more likely to drive home while overtired from a summer getaway than at other times of the year. (Each year 71,000 are injured in drowsy-driving accidents.) And 53% of drivers admitted they were more likely to break a traffic law if caught in summer traffic.
