JUAN DIEGO CUAUHTLATOATZIN, 16th century peasant from the Zapotec tribe, whose vision of the Virgin of Guadalupe helped drive the conversion of millions of Indians throughout the Americas; in Mexico City. On his fifth trip to Mexico, Pope John Paul II performed the canonization, the first for a member of an indigenous North American tribe.
