Israeli forces pulled out of three west Bank towns as U.S. special envoy Anthony Zinni returned to the region for another attempt at forging a cease-fire. The U.S. called for a full Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian areas, but soldiers remained on the outskirts of several communities, including Hebron and Bethlehem. Israel also kept a cordon around Ramallah, where, earlier in the week, it answered a series of Palestinian attacks by deploying tanks, troops and helicopter gunships.
