Malala Yousafzai more than deserves the worldwide appreciation and respect bestowed upon her for what she has so bravely been trying to do from a young age: stand up for the education and self-determination of girls and women. But let us also remember that she was born in a Muslim country to Muslim parents. If they had decided that she should stay at home or be married off, there is nothing she could have done about it, even if she had wanted to.
