A corollary of the old saying that generals fight the last war is that they also build weapons for that war. The F-35 is the most expensive weapon in history, at an estimated $400 billion, but it was designed to fight the battles of the late 20th century. The question is whether it's the weapon we need now. As our Feb. 11 cover story made clear, drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, are the new weapon of choice for America's military, and they can fly farther and more stealthily than the F-35, without risk to a pilot.
