The Fight Against Polio
It is evident from the story "Polio and Politics" that ignorance and superstition are the real enemies of the population in countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan [Jan. 14]. Weapons and warfare will not eradicate the Taliban, who terrorize people in the name of religion, or extremists, who spread false messages, but nonviolent emancipation and education will. It's time for the West to get its priorities right.
