Fareed Zakaria's "The Debt Deal's Failure" rings true [Aug. 15]. I fear Congress has truly lost its ability to understand the situation of the average American. Standard & Poor's decision to downgrade the U.S. credit rating for the first time in history at a time when America's finances are so very fragile speaks to this blindness and to our leaders' inability to work together.
