    The obvious answer to that is the Muslim world and the rest of the world. But it's more complex than that because a lot of the battle is not between Islam and the West. It is inside the Muslim world, between those forces that are authoritarian and those who object to that.

    Which of your books would you like to see adapted for film?

    There's a project right now to make a film of Midnight's Children, and I've written the screenplay. It's going to be directed by the Canadian-Indian director Deepa Mehta.

    What will you do when you are no longer interested in writing?

    I don't foresee that day. I can't think of anything else I would do. So I better do this.
