    1959 ETA forms in the shadow of General Franco's dictatorship, which suppresses the Basques' unique culture. Nine years later, ETA launches its first attack, killing a local policeman.

    1973 Six months after taking office, Franco-appointed Prime Minister Luis Carrero Blanco is killed when his car drives over explosives planted by ETA in Madrid.

    1985 During the conflict's bloodiest decade, the militant separatists detonate their first car bomb in Madrid. The attack kills one U.S. tourist and injures 16 guards.

    2009 A powerful car bomb injures 60 when it explodes outside a police barracks on July 29. The next day, a bomb at another guardhouse kills two officers.

    * | What They're Censoring in San Francisco: After 17 state attorneys general asked Craigslist, the champ of online classifieds, to close down its adult-services section, the company responded on Sept. 3 by putting a black "censored" label over the category on its U.S. website. Craigslist did not immediately indicate whether the block was permanent or temporary. Critics claim the erotic category promotes prostitution and human trafficking and have urged Craigslist to shutter similar areas on its international sites.
