Colorado-born jeweler Matthew Campbell Laurenza caught the creative bug early on when, inspired by his family's antique collection, he began studying jewelry design. At 17, with no formal training, he created his first major work, a centerpiece of silver dragonflies for his mother. After pursuing a degree in sculpture, Laurenza moved to Thailand to study gemstones and began his eponymous label, M.C.L. Design.
