With at least 135 outbreaks of the foot-and-mouth virus reported in Britain since the first case was confirmed on Feb. 20, Chief Veterinary Officer Jim Scudamore predicted that "the disease is going to last for a long time." His warning dampened hopes the epidemic would peak after a two-week ban on livestock movement and the destruction of 82,000 animals. In Brussels, the European Union stopped all livestock markets for two weeks and extended a current ban on the export of British meat, livestock and milk until Mar. 27.
