Posted Tuesday, December 05, 2006

LONDON: 29 November 2006: Last night, TIME magazine won two awards at the 2006 Foreign Press Association Media Awards. J.F.O. McAllister won the award for best story of the year by a foreign correspondent based in London for 'A Woman's Work is Never Done', a special cover story which marked the 80th birthday of the Queen. Tim McGirk won the award for Print Story of the Year for TIME's exclusive report about the death of 15 Iraqi civilians in Haditha, entitled 'Collateral Damage or Civilian Massacre?' The awards were presented by FPA President Annalisa Piras and Clive Anderson at an award ceremony at the Park Lane Hotel in Piccadilly, London.

The double victory — the most by any publication — came just two days before TIME magazine celebrates its 60th anniversary of publishing in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. A gala event will be held at the Royal Courts of Justice on Thursday November 30, honouring the people featured in TIME's special '60 Years of Heroes' issue. Bob Geldof, Mary Quant, Natasa Kandic and Christiane Amanpour — who were all featured in the anniversary issue — will attend to collect their awards. Elena Bonner has travelled to London especially to collect an award behalf of her late husband Andrei Sakharov. Cherie Booth QC, one of many high profile guest writers in the special issue, will also be speaking at the awards ceremony.

Michael Elliott, Editor, TIME International, said, "I am delighted for Jef and Tim. These awards, for two very different stories, demonstrate TIME's unique ability to get to the heart of a story and to provide exclusive reports for our readers. As we celebrate our 60th anniversary this week, these awards are a testament to the calibre of TIME's journalism and the strength of the TIME brand." TIME is a global multimedia brand that includes TIME.com, TIME Style & Design, TIME for KIDS and Timeforkids.com.
